Yokuts Chant

My words are tied in one with the great mountains, with the great rocks, with the great trees, in one with my body and my heart. All of you see me, one with this world.

Native American Wisdom

The Yokuts (also known as the Mariposan) occupied parts of California. They were divided into about 50 tribes, each with its own dialect and territory. Chiefs, who were sometimes women, headed their tribes.

The Yokuts were a hunter-gatherer community. They wore very little clothing, and performed many ceremonies and rituals. They also had unique village jobs, such as local jester and undertaker.

There are about 1500 Yokuts today, most of whom live in California.
