Latvia is a small country bordering the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Rega on its west. In early times, it was occupied by Balts, and was later ruled by Vikings, Germans, Poland, Sweden, and Russia. It became an independent country in 1991. The majority of the population is Latvian, and about one fourth of it is Russian.
