Estonia is a mainland plus about 1500 islands located near the Baltic Sea, west of Russia. The country has many lakes, forests, and rivers.
Despite its vulnerable position, Estonia was able to withstand many invaders until Danes took over in the 1200s. Other groups such as the Swedish and the Polish ruled some of the territory, and then the Russians (later the Soviets) took over in 1721. Estonia gained independence in 1991.
Estonian themes include literature, birds, theatre, newspapers, potatoes, and oil shale.
