Located in southern South America bordering the Pacific Ocean, Chile is easy to spot on a map because of its unique long and narrow shape. It also consists of many small islands near the mainland.

Native American groups such as the Mapuche and Aymara lived in Chile until Spanish arrival in the 1500s. After winning independence form Spain in the early 1800s, Chile later won coastal territory from Bolivia in a war in the late 1800s. Chile currently has a democratic government.
